What is it about?

We catalog many examples from well-known sports globally in which perverse outcomes (some weird and wacky) were observed in sporting contests, because of the rules governing play; either: (i) because the rule itself caused the problem; (ii) because the rules were insufficient to cover the contingency; or (iii) because of bad tournament design.

Why is it important?

The cases serve to highlight instances in which rules cause problems for sport and its many stakeholder groups. For senior administrators, there are many lessons to be learned so as to help circumvent such cases from happening again.

Perspectives

In addition to above, sports are in so many ways a microcosm of broader society. Thus, these cases also serve to teach us analogous things about effective public policy and the like.
