What is it about?

This study examined the associations between caregivers’ emotion regulation strategies and parenting styles, and how they contributed to the preschoolers’ emotional competence in a sociocultural context where grandparenting was prevalent. Our findings underscore the importance of caregivers employing cognitive reappraisal in emotion regulation, as well as adopting more authoritative and less authoritarian parenting behaviors in their daily interaction with children, on the development of stronger emotion regulation competence in preschoolers.

Why is it important?

This study contributes to the existing knowledge on the relations between caregivers’ emotion regulation strategies, parenting styles, and children’s emotion regulation competence, and addresses the research gap in grandparenting among co-residential multigeneration families in urban China. From an educational point of view, this research furthers our understanding of the specific aspects of parenting that may contribute to raising emotionally competent children.

Perspectives

Given the increasing importance of childrearing in China and other parts of the world, there is a need to develop parenting interventions specifically for grandparents and to provide them with more support in their parenting roles. Based on the current finding that cognitive reappraisal in caregivers contributes to adaptive emotional development in the preschoolers, parenting interventions for both parents and grandparents may include training components that focus on promoting their awareness of their use of emotion regulation strategies and acquisition of emotion-supportive parenting skills in their interactions with children.
