We examine the effect of introducing a Research Evaluation Exercise (REE) in the Italian Higher Education system on university student enrolments.

Why is it important?
Many countries are introducing REEs in their Higher Education Systems. However, little is known on their effects on student enrolments. In particular, it is important to assess whether universities' performances in these exercises is taken into account by students when they decide which institution to enrol in. Our analysis demonstrates that the first Italian REE had a positive effect on student enrolment, but only in the top-performing universities. The effect was larger for high-quality students, namely those with better high school final marks or coming from the academic track.
