What is it about?

Lunasin is a naturally occurring peptide found in soybean that can both prevent the transformation of cells into cancer cells and inhibit the growth of established cancers. Here we review what is known about the molecular basis for these activities.

Why is it important?

Lunasin has potential to be used in the growing arsenal of anti-cancer drugs; however, this potential has yet to be exploited. We now know that lunasin can target specific signaling pathways well known to be important for metastasis. This key discovery provides the basis of a rational strategy for the further development of lunasin for the prevention and treatment of multiple cancer types.

Perspectives

The goal of this review was to try and raise awareness about lunasin and its potential and to get updated information out about lunasin's mechanism of action.
