What is it about?
The work concerns the chemical and thermal modification of granular activated carbon in order to change its acid-base characteristics (surface oxygen group concentration) and to assess the effect of these modifications on the adsorption capacity of aromatic organic compounds with different properties. Detailed analyses of porous, acid-base, chemical, and thermal stability properties of the carbon were carried out using techniques such as nitrogen sorption, potentiometric titration, X-ray spectroscopy, and thermal analysis. To assess the effectiveness of the adsorbents in removing selected organic compounds, experimental measurements and analysis of kinetic and equilibrium data were performed.

Why is it important?
This research is important because it provides key information on the effects of various chemical and thermal modifications on the properties of activated carbon, which can significantly affect its efficiency in adsorption of organic pollutants. Understanding how these modifications affect the ability of carbon to remove various aromatic organic compounds is important for developing more effective filter materials for water and air purification. Furthermore, the results can contribute to the optimization of industrial processes and the development of new environmental technologies.
