Why is it important?
This paper proposes that dietary potassium lowers blood pressure, in part, by inhibiting salt retention along the distal tubule. It does so by altering the voltage of distal tubule cells, which in turn alters the intracellular chloride concentration. This affects WNK kinases, which regulate sodium chloride transport.
