What is it about?
Cross-sectional areas of tear meniscus can be measured non-invasively by high magnification optical coherence tomography. This articles describes the range of the parameters and what they are correlated to. In particular the measurements can be used to document conjunctivochalassis or excessive horizontal folds of conjunctival tissue, a very common condition found in people, which disturbs the flow of tear fluid on the eye.

Why is it important?
The area of the tear meniscus can improve our understanding of tear morphology in health and disease. This is a study conducted in 450 individuals in a non-selected population study (sampled from government census of residents within a certain area) so it is likely more representative than hospital based samples.
