What is it about?

The aim of this review is to describe phenotypic and functional characteristics of Treg cells and to review the literature with respect to the reported Treg defects and its association with the clinical manifestation in CVID.

Why is it important?

Several studies reported that Treg frequencies and their functional characteristics are disturbed and might account for the aberrant immune responses observed in CVID patients. These abnormalities in Tregs may result in elevated levels of activated T cells, autoimmunity, and chronic inflammation.

Perspectives

CVID patients have a compromised regulatory cell compartment which is associated with the clinical characteristics manifested by these patients. Research in this area might offer noteworthy data to better understand immune dysfunctions and dysregulations related to CVID condition. Gathering further data on the mechanisms in future investigations will be valuable, whereby abnormalities in Breg and Treg cells mediate autoimmune presentations in CVID patients.
