What is it about?

Pre-treatment with embelin for 15 days significantly inhibited apomorphine-induced climbing and stereotyped behaviours in mice and rats, respectively. Embelin also statistically reversed elevated levels of dopamine, noradrenaline and serotonin neurotransmitters by apomorphine in the rodent brain. Embelin showed more significant results at high dose (10 mg/kg) in both the tested models. The study results suggest that embelin possesses antipsychotic activity in the treatment of psychotic disorders.

Why is it important?

This study scientifically documents the traditional claim of antipsychotic activity of embelin (major active constituent of Embelia ribes), an alkyl substituted hydroxy benzoquinone.

Perspectives

Considering the study results, embelin showed antipsychotic activity in the treatment of psychotic disorders. However, further research is warranted for evaluating its exact mechanism of action.
