What is it about?
Iron complexes were under investigations for their applicability as T1 contrast agents. We obtained a non-saturated, pentadentate complexes (with one free coordination site) and we tested them in NMR. They expressed high potential in acceleration of relaxation phenomena. The complexes are chelated with amino-phenol (N,O) ligands expressing high stability.

Why is it important?
This is a first example of non-saturated iron(III) coordination compounds tested for MRI. Previously it was assumed that open coordination site enables active redox (undesired) behavior. However, as we showed is elsewhere (Redox Report), this kind of undesired activity is small. Thus, we where able to show that the magnetic properties of these complexes are comparable to the gadolinium complexes, commonly used in medicine.
