What is it about?
Eating food away from home is almost an essential component in the lifestyle of the households in the developed countries. As developing countries in South Asia are rapidly emerging due to speedy economic development, it would be interesting to examine the pattern of eating away from home in the emerging economies. The study examined the issues related to eating away from home in Bangladesh using nationally representative datasets collected by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics.

Why is it important?
With the increase in the per capita income, speedy urbanization and changing lifestyle expenditure share on food away from home should increase in Bangladesh over the years. Our study, however, showed that the expenditure on food away from home in Bangladesh has not increased very much at the household level. We assume two things: households in Bangladesh are not confident in the quality of the food away from home in the presence of rampant food adulteration in Bangladesh. We also have shown that the revenue of the hospitality business has been declining in Bangladesh over the years. It indicates the importance of public intervention to ensure the food quality away from home in Bangladesh.
