What is it about?
Based on evidence about Australia this paper identifies a strong relationship between migration to a destination country and subsequent flows of visiting friends and relatives (VFR). It shows that there is an almost equally strong relationship for types of tourism other than VFR (eg travel for purposes of leisure, business and/or education).

Why is it important?
This paper can guide policymakers in conceptualizing how destination countries view the complementarities between tourism and migration flows, namely two dimensions which are often viewed as very separate. It can assist scholars to understanding the role of leisure travel within the wider context of human mobilities.
