What is it about?
Salmonellosis causes significant economic loss to the pig industry. Currently, the EU bans using antibiotics as growth promoters in pig production. Here, we determined the effects of prebiotic, probiotic and synbiotic diet regimes on antibody responses to oral Salmonella challenge of pigs. The data demonstrate that the inclusion of a probiotic or pre-biotic in the diet enhanced antibody responses to salmonella challenge. When included in the diet together, however, each of their effects were reduced. The data support the use of a pre- or pro-biotic to help control salmonella infection in pigs.
