Why is it important?

This species is unique, as far as we can tell, in the manner its carapace (shell) structure facilitates the deposition of biomaterials including algae. The microstructure of the carapace has evolved to increase the deposition of microorganisms such as algae for protection and camouflage. Studying such structures might serve as models for the creation of biofouling materials.
