Why is it important?

Occupational and environmental medicine (OEM) specialists often encounter patients who have a history of occupational or environmental exposure to neurotoxicants. Patients with neurotoxic disease often complain of problems with cognition and sensorimotor symptoms. The differential diagnosis of these neurological symptoms is complicated and requires that the OEM specialist refer the patient to other specialists (e.g., neurologist and neuropsychologist) for additional testing. The OEM specialist needs to be familiar with the results of these tests and how to interpret the findings in context of the exposure history. This chapter reviews the best clinical practices for objectively documenting and diagnosing the neurotoxic effects of common neurotoxicants found in the workplace and environment.
