Why is it important?

Archaeologists often do sampling, but do not always pay close enough attention to the implications of their sampling methods - whether probability sampling or not - for the results of their research or the degree of confidence we should place in those results.

Perspectives

I would argue that probability sampling is not always the most appropriate approach to sampling archaeological landscapes, sites, features, or artifacts, but carefully designed probability samples are required in many contexts where archaeologists want to make generalizations in a convincing way.
