What is it about?
This chapter reviews the history of the development of vaccines administered by mucosal routes

Why is it important?
Given that most infections either directly afflict the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and genital tracts and their associated glands and tissues, or invade through them, immune protection against them requires elicitation of mucosal immune responses expressed at these locations. This is most readily achieved by vaccination strategies using mucosal routes of administration. Future development of mucosal vaccines should take into account what has already been achieved and learned about the mechanisms involved.
