What is it about?
The paper extends beyond the various accounts of tourism higher education in Australia and New Zealand to explore some of the differences and similarities. Provision in Australia boomed during the 1990s before falling back as the economy became increasingly resources based. The paper explores the impact of the Sustainable Tourism Co-operative Research Centre on education provision and the impacts of its demise.

Why is it important?
Australia and New Zealand are more significant in tourism and hospitality education than might be anticipated on the basis of their relatively small populations. Australasian and New Zealand scholars have made major contributions to tourism researcher and largely numbers of international students have studied in the two countries. Understanding the dynamics is particularly important in light of the closer scholarly alignment between the two systems. The extension of CAUTHE to cover New Zealand institutions was s significant step.
