What is it about?
Low energy building technology has opened novel opportunities in reducing the energy use in buildings. To approach extreme low energy levels and eventually total self-sufficiency in energy, active solar heating and photovoltaics, combined with effective seasonal energy storage, is necessary. Optimum sizing values for such systems are presented. Energy storage remains, in practice, the major technical constraint to achieve high solar fractions. Hydrogen-based storage approaches may solve the energy storage problem in the future.
