What is it about?
An innovative approach to young driver road safety recognises that the young driver road safety system involves much more than the young driver themselves. As such, the young driver is just one cog within a much larger multi-level young driver road safety system machine. However, much remains unknown about the young driver road safety system more generally and in Queensland, Australia, specifically. We interviewed 82 individuals from 26 different stakeholders previously identified as playing a role in the young driver road safety system. The interview transcripts were synthesised.

Why is it important?
We found that some stakeholders interacted directly with other stakeholders at their respective level, and there was limited interaction between organisations at higher levels (such as federal and state governments) with organisations at lower levels (such as teachers and driving instructors). Interestingly, some stakeholders reported engagement with a breadth of other stakeholders but this interaction was not communicated by the other parties, suggesting numerous unidirectional interactions.
Perspectives
For a “safe” young driver road safety system, we need to have optimal interactions between stakeholders between the same level (horizontal integration) and across levels (vertical integration), with information from higher level stakeholders filtering to stakeholders at lower levels, and vise versa. However, it appears that the young driver road safety system is not characterised by optimal and effective interaction. At this stage, the optimal structure of the safe young driver road safety system remains unknown.
