What is it about?

This study investigates the factors contributing to low birth weight (LBW) in Indonesia, which remains a significant concern due to its impact on infant health and future disease risks. Using data from the 2017 Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey, the study examined various maternal and socio-demographic factors associated with LBW. The findings highlight the importance of maternal antenatal care (ANC) visits in reducing LBW risk, emphasizing the need for increased ANC utilization through targeted health promotion efforts.

Why is it important?

With LBW continuing to pose a significant public health challenge in Indonesia, this study provides valuable insights into its determinants based on recent population-level data. By focusing on factors such as ANC visits and maternal education, the research identifies actionable areas for intervention to reduce LBW prevalence. The findings are timely and relevant for policymakers, healthcare providers, and public health practitioners seeking to implement effective strategies to improve maternal and child health outcomes in Indonesia.

Perspectives

As a researcher committed to maternal and child health, I believe this study offers important contributions to addressing the issue of LBW in Indonesia. By pinpointing key determinants such as ANC utilization, the findings underscore the critical role of healthcare access and quality in mitigating LBW risk. As we strive to improve maternal and child health outcomes, implementing targeted interventions to increase ANC utilization is imperative for reducing LBW prevalence and promoting healthier birth outcomes across Indonesia.
