What is it about?
This study investigates the reasons why Indonesian nurses choose to stay and work in Japanese healthcare facilities. Through in-depth interviews with 22 Indonesian nurses, six critical factors influencing their retention were identified: supportive organizational environments, strong social networks, individual motivation for lifelong learning, enabling government policies, family support, and attractive financial benefits. These insights emphasize the need for targeted policies and workplace strategies to effectively support and retain international nursing professionals in Japan.

Why is it important?
Japan is currently facing a significant nursing shortage, while Indonesia has a surplus of qualified nurses eager to work abroad. Retaining Indonesian nurses in Japanese healthcare settings is essential to closing this workforce gap and enhancing the quality of healthcare services. By understanding the key factors that encourage Indonesian nurses to remain in Japan, policymakers and healthcare institutions can develop more effective retention strategies that benefit nurses, healthcare systems, and patients alike. Key takeaways: 1) Supportive work environments and career development opportunities are vital to keeping Indonesian nurses motivated and engaged in Japanese healthcare facilities. 2) Strong social support systems, including colleagues, friends, and community groups, reduce isolation and improve job satisfaction for migrant nurses. 3)Family and economic considerations, such as children's education and competitive salaries, significantly influence Indonesian nurses' decisions to stay long-term in Japan.
Perspectives
The study underscores the resilience and motivation of Indonesian nurses. Despite challenges, they demonstrate adaptability and commitment to professional growth, often leveraging education, training, and economic incentives to sustain their careers in Japan.
