What is it about?
Currently, the interactions of an extensive set of individual and combined CO2 mitigation measures along the petroleum value chain and over time are poorly assessed. This paper aims to assess a bottom-up CO2 mitigation potential for a complex refinery, including portfolios of combined mitigation options, considering synergies, overlap, and interactions over time for more realistic insight into the costs and constraints of the mitigation portfolio. This paper identified 40 different measures from a broad technological portfolio, including the most promising options such as CCUS, Biomass, electrification and hydrogen.

Why is it important?
Under climate change threats, time is of the essence. This paper shows how to make the most of current oil refineries' infrastructure to reach carbon neutral on scopes 1 and 2 for liquid fuels. Expertise, logistic, scalability and high volumes delivering promises make refineries a key role in the rapid decarbonization of liquid fuels.
