What is it about?

This study examines how extreme rainfall and snowfall events have changed across the Northern Hemisphere over recent decades. Using long-term reanalysis data, we find that extreme rainfall has intensified and become more frequent, while extreme snowfall has shown a contrasting declining trend across most regions. These opposing trends are driven by rising temperatures, which increase atmospheric moisture and shift precipitation from snow to rain, particularly at mid-to-high latitudes. The study documents where these contrasting changes are most pronounced and identifies the key climate factors responsible for these diverging trends in precipitation extremes.

Why is it important?

Extreme rainfall and snowfall have profound impacts on water resources, flood risk, agriculture, and ecosystems. As the climate warms, understanding how these two forms of precipitation extremes are changing—and why they are changing in opposite directions—is critical for adaptation planning. This study provides the first systematic Northern Hemisphere-scale analysis of contrasting precipitation extreme trends, filling a gap left by studies that treat rainfall and snowfall extremes separately. The findings have direct relevance for water resource management, disaster risk reduction, and climate projections in regions where snowmelt is a primary freshwater source.

Perspectives

Watching extreme rainfall intensify while snowfall extremes weaken is, in many ways, a vivid signature of a warming world. What strikes me most is not just the magnitude of these changes, but the spatial coherence of the contrasting trends—the same warming signal that fuels heavier rainfall is simultaneously eroding the snowfall regimes that many societies and ecosystems depend on. I hope this work encourages researchers and policymakers to treat rainfall and snowfall extremes not in isolation, but as coupled components of a shifting precipitation system whose balance is being fundamentally altered by climate change.
