What is it about?

This paper describes the development of a survey to measure children's experience after reporting aggression to the teacher, including aggression that may have been cleverly hidden from the teacher.

Why is it important?

Teachers can provide a secure base of care for children who report aggression at school. Children have told us that teachers do not always see that children are being aggressive, or are bullying others or being bullied. This can take away the secure base of care from children who report aggression, leaving children feeling lonely and isolated from help.

Perspectives

It takes a socially clever child to hide aggression and bullying from the teacher. Blaming the teacher for not seeing the behavior would be inappropriate. The Social Experience of Teacher Support Scale provides a measure of children's experience.
