Why is it important?
Tics are briefly suppressible, with effort. This characteristic sets tics apart from many other movement disorders, and can lead to confusion on the part of parents, teachers or others, who may misinterpret this phenomenon as evidence that the tics are under complete voluntary control. Why tics are suppressible, and how tic suppression is accomplished in the brain, are topics of increasing research interest.
