What is it about?
Polished surfaces of cast irons used in block engines were tested under linear scratch system. Samples were positioned to obey a similar orientation during the honing process. This test simulates one of the most important mechanisms observed in block engine, the abrasion.

Why is it important?
We used a tool geometry for scratching surfaces trying to simulate a real machining condition. In this case, the friction was very disturbed by the presence of graphite. Even tough, compacted graphite promotes a minor friction, which can be a good indicative for future evaluation of its machinability.
