What is it about?

The ITIPPS are a set of principles for schools to apply in their context when seeking to build, progress, and sustain trauma-informed practices. Our paper presents the process involved in establishing expert-informed principles to guide schools in better supporting and caring for all students, as well as families, school staff, and the wider community.

Why is it important?

Recognition that schools should be responsive to children who are impacted by adversity and trauma is burgeoning internationally. However, consensus regarding the necessary components of a trauma-informed school is lacking. This research developed expert-informed and internationally relevant best-practice trauma-informed principles for schools.

Perspectives

The principles shared in this paper provide important guidance that many schools are seeking, especially when contending with how to care for students and meet their needs. The ITIPPS are child-centred, rights-based, and have a focus on social justice in education contexts.
