What is it about?

Diagnostic errors, constituted by a missed, wrong, or delayed diagnosis detected later by additional tests or findings, are one of the most vexing issues in medicine. In this write-up, we discuss the reasons for diagnostic errors and how medical students can be trained to avoid such errors.

Why is it important?

One of the most challenging and stimulating tasks of a clinician is to arrive at a diagnosis, a process affected both by cognitive and system factors. Errors in diagnosis are one of the commonest causes of patient-harm and also medical negligence claims.

Perspectives

Before researching for this write-up, I was not aware that so many interventions are available for teaching medical graduates to reduce medical-errors.
