What is it about?
Our review focuses on the operational mechanism of electrolyte additives on the surface/interface chemistry of metallic Zn anode for the blooming aqueous Zn metal batteries (ZMBs). It systematically summarizes the effects of electrolyte additives on the physicochemical properties of electrolytes, and the electrolyte-zinc interface that influences the electric double layer structure, formation mechanism of solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) and texture formation of Zn.

Why is it important?
ZMB is facing its critical challenge on the reversibility of Zn anode. Serving as one of the main strategies in electrolyte regulation, electrolyte additives enable reshaping the solvation structure of electrolyte and further regulating the surface reaction on Zn. This hinders the Zn dendrite growth and water-induced side reactions. So far, there is only a few emphasizing on the operational mechanism of electrolyte additives for the aqueous electrolytes in ZMB. It is therefore indispensable to point out its essence here.
