What is it about?
Mercuric ions are toxic and its content in water should be known. We have used carbon dots and gold nanoclusters to measure the mercuric content in water. The fluorescence color of the two nanomaterial can change from pink to blue when there are mercuric ions in water.

Why is it important?
This work shows that mercuric ions in water can be detected visually without complicated instruments, which is important water safety.
Perspectives
I think this article shows the great possibility of gold nanoclusters in on-site detection application.
