What is it about?
Thermoelectric devices convert heat from a variety of sources into electrical current, which can then be used in our houses. This process is environmentally friendly and devices have a long lifespan since there are not moving parts. Silicon and Germanium form the basic element in our technology and producing thermoelectric device with them can have a number of advantages. Here, we show that Si and Ge nanowires are excellent thermoelectric devices.

Why is it important?
Thermoelectricity can be a game-changer in the energy industry since it could replace other non-renewable sources in a large number of problematic applications. A key question in the field is how to integrate these devices into our technology that is based on Silicon. We show that Si and Ge nanowires can form excellent thermoelectric devices.
