What is it about?
We are continuously exploring the extraordinary properties of molecular hydrogen and discovering its new therapeutic potentials. We could find the ability of hydrogen-rich water (HRW) to alleviate nickel-related stress disorders and negative effects in the earthworm model. In this study, it was shown for the first time that the nickel toxicity in earthworms, one of the most important organisms of the terrestrial ecosystem, can be alleviated with the application of a green treatment, i.e., HRW. The HRW could alleviate the negative effects of heavy metals such as nickel which have a continuous input into the ecosystem and have toxic effects on living things. In this study, we could prove also the promoting effect of molecular hydrogen on the production of cocoons in earthworms.

Why is it important?
This novel method of the use of hydrogen-enriched water for the treatment of heavy metal-contaminated soils could be an advantageous strategy due to its cheapness and green and eco-friendly properties without any negative effects or toxic residuals on the ecosystem.
