What is it about?

In recent years, International Organizations (IOs) have been paying more attention to environmental concerns. Things that weren't seen as very important before now have a big effect on how these organizations make policies. Therefore, groups focused on the environment are now more important to these big IOs. This study looks at how environmental International Non-Governmental Organizations (INGOs) from different countries influence the way big IOs think about environmental issues. Researchers used mathematical models to see how close these groups are to the main offices of IOs and how they work with local groups. They looked at information from 1950 to 2017 and studied approx 76 US-based groups working with World Bank. They wanted to know if having these groups close to where IOs work makes IOs care more about the environment.

Why is it important?

The study found that when environmental groups are close to the main office of IOs, they talk to them, share information, and work together. As a result, the IOs are more likely to support environmental policies. It also helps us understand how people from local and nearby international groups can join in and make stronger rules about the environment. In short, the study helps us know more about how groups can make a difference and why where they are is so important. KEY TAKEAWAY: This study highlights important findings for two important discussions in global relations. It explains how groups near large organizations can have a big impact on policies. They talk to the leaders, get attention by protesting, and share important facts. Also, the research suggests to look beyond only countries and organizations to see how nearby groups can shape choices. This gives new ideas about how global rules are created. This research relates to the following Sustainable Development Goals: • SDG 13: Climate Action • SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals • SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions
