What is it about?

We show that SME internationalization is a process that combines entrepreneurial and non-entrepreneurial behavior. We conclude that that 1) mainly non-entrepreneurial internationalization can occur without a clearly defined internationalization strategy; 2) low commitment to internationalization prevents capability development and may lead to nonlinear internationalization; 3) family involvement may affect a firm’s international entrepreneurial orientation, and lead to more non-entrepreneurial internationalization.

Why is it important?

The combination of entrepreneurial and non-entrepreneurial internationalization cannot be fully explained with existing International Entrepreneurship literature or other internationalization theories.
