What is it about?
The importance of thrombophilias in eye diseases is not determined. Family history of venous thromboembolism is more related to genetic than non-genetic factors. We have for the first time determined whether genetic factors involved in venous thromboembolism also are important for development of retinal vein or artery occlusion and also glaucoma

Why is it important?
We do not find any association between family history of venous thromboembolism and retinal vein or artery thrombosis or glaucoma. The genetic of these eye diseases are thus completely unrelated to factors involved in venous thromboembolism. Determining major thrombophilias in patients with retinal vascular occlusions is therefore not relevant.
