What is it about?

This paper provides a comprehensive corpus-based analysis of three Russian idiomatic constructions (čego dobrogo, togo i gljadi, and ne roven čas) belonging to the semantic field of apprehension. Using data of the Russian National Corpus, we seek to account for semantic, pragmatic, and combinatory similarity and differences between these discourse markers. The semantics of all three units include assessment of probability and negative evaluation of an event, which are the core features of the semantics of apprehension. However, each of these markers possesses its own unique configuration of additional features, which are partly determined by their internal form (image components of their semantics). The data of parallel corpora have allowed us to demonstrate that the use of these Russian markers is determined by a specific discursive strategy typical of the Russian language.
