What is it about?
We develop a new method to examine potential political bias in AI language models like ChatGPT. Our approach asks ChatGPT to answer ideological questions while impersonating different political viewpoints, then compares these to its default responses. Using this method, we find evidence that ChatGPT shows a significant bias towards left-leaning political views across different countries. We believe this finding has important implications, as AI language models see increasing use for information and content creation, potentially influencing public opinion similar to traditional and social media.

Why is it important?
This paper is important because it introduces a new, straightforward method to detect political bias in AI language models like ChatGPT. Our findings reveal a consistent left-leaning bias in ChatGPT's responses across various political contexts and countries. This is significant as these AI models are increasingly used for information retrieval and content creation, potentially influencing public opinion on a large scale. Our work has broad implications for policymakers, media professionals, and tech companies striving to ensure AI systems remain impartial and trustworthy. The simplicity of our method also allows for wider public scrutiny of AI systems, contributing to the ongoing discussion about measuring and addressing bias in AI - a crucial aspect of AI ethics and development.
