What is it about?

Plant microbiomes are complex; they contain a large number of bacteria and fungi whose contributions to plant growth are mostly unknown. By examining the alfalfa nodule microbiome, we found a number of bacteria other than rhizobia, many of which are potential plant growth promoting bacteria.

Why is it important?

Shows the difference in Medicago microbial metagenomes in an agricultural setting that is highly fertilized versus a botanical garden that is not.

Perspectives

Many of the non-rhizobia isolates have already been identified as plant growth promoting bacteria. More studies are underway.
