What is it about?

This study concerns the cognitive development and social-emotional functioning of foster children (FC) and comparison children (CC) at 2 and 3 years of age. Group differences with respect to changes over time were examined There were significant differences on all cognitive scales, with the FC obtaining lower scores than the CC. There was more externalizing, dysregulation behavior and poorer competencies among FC than CC , who nevertheless exhibited significantly better cognitive abilities and competencies at 3 than at 2 years, with the exception of receptive language.

Why is it important?

It is of interest that the foster children did not evince more negative social-emotional behaviour at 3 years of age, apart from more internalization behavior, although they failed to catch up with the comparison group.

Perspectives

This study demonstrates that foster children need screening and support at an early age with an aim to improve their developmental potential.
