What is it about?

UK Biobank is a large population study which plans to image 100,000 people to evaluate their heart function using MRI. Here, we describe the automated analysis methods activated during the image acquisition procedure. We also compare results with a manual analysis in the first 5000 participants. Fully automated results will be available in the images in all cases.

Why is it important?

Heart disease is the number one killer around the world. UK Biobank enables study of detailed heart function in relation to environmental and lifestyle factors which affect the development of disease.

Perspectives

Although automated results have been made available with the original images, care should be taken to review the results. Outliers can be identified and rejected with a simple visual review. More subtle bias in left ventricular mass can be removed using a correction with a linear regression.
