What is it about?

Paediatric patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and chemotherapy (CT) develop oral mucositis grade 3 and/or 4 , requiring hospitalization for parenteral feeding . A new protocol has been proposed in order to reduce the time of hospitalization of these patients and to minimize pain and discomfort due to oral mucositis.

Why is it important?

In this paper we define a new protocol for oral mucositis developed after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and chemotherapy (CT) in pediatric onco-haematological patients. The application of photo-biomodulation in 4 steps showed an immediate improvement of healing in ulcerated oral mucosa, reducing patient's pain and discomfort, parenteral feeding time, total period of hospitalization .

Perspectives

The application of our protocol for the treatment of oral mucositis in pediatric patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and chemotherapy (CT) could improve quality of life for these children and their families.
