What is it about?
Based on 5-minute accumulations of rainfall data from the urban network of Barcelona (1994-2009), the calculation of the intensity-frequency (IF) curve corresponding to the duration of 5 minutes for each rain gauge of the network was carried out, as well as its spatial distribution (rainfall amount in 5 minutes for return periods of 10, 25 and 50 years) over the metropolitan area of the city.

Why is it important?
The present analysis should contribute to improving the knowledge on urban flood risks and to designing better drainage strategies to mitigate the effects of very heavy rainfall in Barcelona.
