What is it about?

We each have a particular shape to the lower part of back; some are curved in towards the centre of the body, others quite straight. That intrinsic shape can be detected as we bend forward and lean back.

Why is it important?

The shape of our lower back appears to affect the way we do things. For instance, it seems to affect whether we stoop or squat to pick up a box from the floor. It may be that if we do not lift in a way that fits the shape of our back we may be more at risk of injury. This may also be relevant to sports such as weight-lifting and cycling in which posture is important.
