What is it about?

Twenty recreational female runners followed 2 different schedules for training a half-marathon event. One group (MICT) trained a mean of 32 km/week at moderate intensity whereas the other group ran 25 km/week at high intensity combined with uphill running and resistance training. All the women were evaluated at the beginning and end of the training and participated in the same half-marathon run.

Why is it important?

Female runners following high-intensity interval training obtained similar registers in a half-marathon race as the other ones who followed a traditional training, but expending less time and running shorter distances, meaning less disturbance of training program in their daily schedule, yet improving their anaerobic and aerobic power.

Perspectives

Middle-aged women can also obtain the benefits of HIIT exercises for the preparation of long distance running events, thus having good tool for work, sport and family reconciliation.
