This study describes the distribution of prokaryotic biomass and enzymatic activity (leucine aminopeptidase, beta.glucosidase and alkaline phosphatase) in permafrost from Antarctica.

Why is it important?
The obtained results show the presence of an actively metabolising prokaryotic community inhabiting the permafrost; these are the first data on Antarctic samples from Victoria Land.
