What is it about?

Examine the contamination status of arsenic (As) and the trace metals cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), iron (Fe), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) in the water column of three economically significant rivers and their deltas in Côte d’Ivoire, the world’s top cocoa producer : the Bandama, the Comoé, and the Bia Rivers

Why is it important?

As and Pb contents in the Comoé and Bia Rivers threaten the health of at least 3 million people in southeastern Côte d’Ivoire. Filtering river waters before use will significantly reduce human health risks.

Perspectives

The study provides background data for future comparison and reveals the need for solid research programs and monitoring systems in surface waters to understand and anticipate arsenic poisoning in West Africa.
