What is it about?
This large study using UK Biobank data investigated the link between broken bones (fragility fractures) and the risk of developing ischaemic cardiovascular events. The study found that there is a 35% increased risk of ischaemic heart disease in men who had fragility fractures in the 5 years prior.

Why is it important?
Osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease are more likely in the elderly, but this study suggests that osteoporosis itself may be an independent risk factor predicting ischaemic cardiovascular events.
