What is it about?

The aim of this study is to find the optimal method of reducing the warpage of a protector cover. Topology optimization and deflection analysis are carried out to obtain a stiff design that resists warpage.

Why is it important?

Warpage is one of the most frequent issues facing the moulding industry, especially for different wall thickness products. The aim of this study is to generate an optimization method in order to reduce warpage of a protector cover as much as possible. The topology optimization results suggest a weak area in the product design. Then, the topology data is used to introduce new patterns of rib location and wall thickness to obtain optimum wall deflection.

Perspectives

Injection moulding is a manufacturing process for producing parts by injecting molten material into a mould. Injection moulding is widely used for manufacturing a variety of parts, from the smallest components to entire body panels of cars. Warpage is the distortion in a moulded product after it is ejected from the mould at the end of the injection moulding process. Warping is sometimes called “potato-chipping” because the part tends to appear wavy and can be a substantial unnecessary cost during the manufacturing process.
