What is it about?
This study assessed the in-vivo loading of the patella using SPECT/CT in a series of patients after TKA. It clearly showed that coronal alignment (varus-valgus) has a significant effect on patellar loading.

Why is it important?
It is important as currently it is only well established that there is a clear influence of sagittal and rotational alignment of TKA on patellar tracking. The findings of this study are new and shed light on the problem of varus-valgus orientation of TKA with regards to change of patellar tracking. These findings should be considered in 3D planning of TKA.
