What is it about?

This study assessed the in-vivo loading of the patella using SPECT/CT in a series of patients after TKA. It clearly showed that coronal alignment (varus-valgus) has a significant effect on patellar loading.

Why is it important?

It is important as currently it is only well established that there is a clear influence of sagittal and rotational alignment of TKA on patellar tracking. The findings of this study are new and shed light on the problem of varus-valgus orientation of TKA with regards to change of patellar tracking. These findings should be considered in 3D planning of TKA.

Perspectives

With this study we have found that coronal alignment significantly influences patellar tracking after TKA. A fact which was previously neglected and should be considered when planning or implanting a total knee prosthesis.
